Some of the most creative paintings from antiquity are depictions of Demons and Damnation. Long before horror flicks taught us to not dismiss noises as 'oh its just the cat' churches were teaching people to behave by threat of afterlife torture. The entrance to most old churches were adorned with commisioned 'worse case scenario' monster pics. SciFi's monster squad is often based on these images. As a fan of surrealist artists i enjoy seeking out their nightmarish precursors, like Hieronymous Bosch.
